What are the steps to getting yourself ‘on the internet’?

1. Find an available ‘domain name’. All web-sites on the internet can be found with a unique name, called a ‘domain name‘. Domain names like yourcompany.com, which would give you a website at www.yourcompany.com and email addresses such as yourname@yourcompany.com. Think of an easy to remember name for your company or organisation, and click here to see if it is still available.
2. Rent some space to place your website and email. This is what is called ‘webhosting‘; a fixed amount of disk-space and bandwidth on a computer that is permanently connected to the internet. This computer, shared with other clients, is physically on the other side of the world in a ‘data-centre‘, a bomb-proof, redundantly connected and power-independent building, ensuring maximum performance and reliability for your website.
3. Create a website. Of-course, having the domain name and the space to run your website is one, having a good looking website is another. At Mica Computer Services we’ll be glad to design a professional looking site, or to help you do so.

Notes: Domain names are rented from organisations called ‘registrars‘. This means that you cannot buy a name and keep it; as long as you pay the rental for the name, you are the legal owner of the name. If the rent has expired for more then one month, however, others are free to take ownership, potentially invalidating all your contact information! This is why we will always contact you 6 weeks before the end of a rental period to ensure timely renewal.

Mica Simba: More space, more bandwidth, for larger websites, best combined with aMica Dynamic Website.
Our price: 15,000 shillings per month*

Mica Tembo: Everything you’ll ever need, for large company websites
Our price: 20,000 shillings per month*

*: prices are inclusive of 20% VAT. Payment up-front, for a 12 month minimum period. If you pay for a mimimum of 2 years (24 months) up-front, you receive a 10% discount!

3. We can also arrange for a ‘Tanzanian‘ domain name (.co.tz or .co.or). The costs for these domains are an additional TSH.55,000/= per year.
4. The ‘Mica Start‘ offering comes without space for email but inclusive of instructions on how to set-up a free Google Gmail account which will work seamlessly with your chosen domain name.
